Former Nigerian President and African Statesman, Olusegun Obasanjo, to lead discussions on Africa’s energy transition and development at African Energy Week 2023.
Olusegun Obasanjo, the former President of Nigeria and a respected African statesman, will host the Energy Growth and Just Transition Presidential Roundtable at the 2023 African Energy Week (AEW) conference and exhibition. The event, scheduled from October 16 to 20, will focus on fostering discussions regarding Africa’s approach to the energy transition. As a key player in African economics and energy, Obasanjo’s insights will significantly contribute to the event’s success.
Obasanjo, whose experience spans leadership roles as both the Head of State of Nigeria and Chairperson of the African Union (AU) from 2004 to 2006, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table. He has played a pivotal role in strengthening cooperation and dialogue among African nations and between the continent and global entities.
Under his leadership, Nigeria made significant strides in its energy sector. The country is now a major oil and gas producer in Africa and boasts a burgeoning renewable energy industry, poised to lead West Africa’s energy transition. Obasanjo prioritized sustainable development through democracy, transparency, and investor confidence, leading to substantial advancements in exploration and production during his tenure.
Additionally, Obasanjo’s administration established the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) in 1977 and oversaw various energy projects throughout the entire value chain. He facilitated the privatization of downstream assets, relieving the state of financial burdens. His efforts aimed to alleviate poverty and establish a democratic system have been critical for Nigeria’s development.
Obasanjo continues to work towards driving pan-African growth and development. He established the African Leadership Forum in 1988, uniting leaders from across the continent and the global community to address development issues and propose solutions. His co-founding of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development in 2001 and the African Peer Review Mechanism have significantly contributed to good governance in Africa.
As the host of the Energy Growth and Just Transition Presidential Roundtable at AEW 2023, Obasanjo will engage with African governments, ministers, and international authorities, with a shared goal of eradicating energy poverty in Africa by 2030. His commitment to Africa’s prosperity and democratic growth will be invaluable at the event, where delegates can anticipate gaining valuable insights into Africa’s energy future.
The AEW 2023 conference, themed “The African Renaissance: Prioritizing Energy Poverty, People, the Planet, Industrialization, and Free Markets,” is set to be the largest gathering of energy stakeholders on the continent. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with influential figures in Africa’s energy sector and contribute to shaping the continent’s energy landscape.
