Sony Corp reported their Q3 2019 financials today, and there wasn’t very much to note on the Sony Interactive Entertainment side of things until they started answering questions.
Sony Corp’s Chief Financial Officer Hiroki Totoki has stated that they will wait for the competition to reveal their prices before making adjustments to their own price for PS5.
” First, we must absolutely control the labor cost, the personnel cost. We will definitely control that. How much can we prepare initially, we will work on the production and the sales and we will have to prepare the right volume. What is not very clear or visible is–because we are competing in this space–it’s very difficult to discuss anything about the price at this point. Depending upon the price level, we may have to determine the promotion that we are going to deploy and how much costs we are prepared to pay. So it’s a question of balance. “
This likely means that, if cheaper, PS5 will the weaker of the 2 major consoles. Sony doesn’t necessarily want to be the more expensive or on par console price-wise as that might mean that they might lose more customers, as in many cases the cheaper platform usually comes out on top. Hopefully, this doesn’t result in a delay in the console’s overall announcement.
It is to be noted that Sony could very well just say “screw it” and not take a cut at all and just launch at the same price. They don’t seem too confident if they’re saying this though, it almost feels like the competition is heating up too much.
