In a landslide victory, Kurt Okraku has been re-elected as the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) during the highly anticipated 2023 Elective Congress held in Tamale on Thursday.
Okraku, who ran uncontested, achieved a remarkable show of support from the 120 delegates present at the congress. In a decisive voting process, President Okraku secured an impressive 97.5% of the total votes cast, amassing a resounding 117 votes in favor of his continued leadership. Only two delegates voted against his retention, while one delegate abstained from the vote.
This resounding mandate solidifies Okraku’s position as the head of Ghana’s football governing body and underscores the high level of confidence that delegates have in his leadership.
It is worth noting that George Afriyie, the sole candidate initially expected to challenge Okraku, was disqualified from the race. The elections, originally slated for September, had to be rescheduled to Thursday, October 5, due to legal complications.
A pending injunction filed by King Faisal awaits resolution, with the court setting October 12 for the hearing. Additionally, George Afriyie lodged an injunction in a Ghanaian court and appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after being disqualified from the presidential race.
Despite these legal challenges, the GFA proceeded with the elections, with President Okraku ultimately receiving an overwhelming endorsement from the delegates, solidifying his role as the leader of Ghanaian football.
