Former President John Dramani Mahama has rekindled his promise to prioritize education and teachers, emphasizing the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) commitment to these principles as he marked World Teachers Day.
In a statement issued on Thursday, October 5, Mahama urged a reflection on the current state of education in Ghana, calling for reforms and enhancements in teaching and learning outcomes. He stressed that improving teaching and learning must be a paramount concern as the nation strives for a more prosperous future.
“Teachers are the backbone of our education system, and we must provide them with the resources, tools, support, and training to enable them to deliver good quality education to our children,” Mahama stated.
He pointed to a specific promise outlined in the 2020 NDC manifesto, found on page 69, which remains valid today. This commitment entails investing in teacher education and professional development programs. Mahama emphasized that well-trained and motivated teachers play a pivotal role in unlocking the full potential of Ghanaian students.
Addressing challenges faced by teachers, including the need for better remuneration and improved working conditions, Mahama assured Ghanaian educators that the NDC remained steadfast in its commitment to delivering on these promises.
“Education is a fundamental right, and every child in Ghana deserves equal access to quality education,” he affirmed.
Regarding the flagship Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, Mahama pledged to strengthen its implementation by investing in infrastructure, expanding access to educational resources, and enhancing the overall learning environment in senior high schools. He reiterated his dedication to elevating teaching and learning in Ghana to new heights.
“Together, we can build an education system that equips our children with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to become responsible and productive citizens,” Mahama concluded.
